New York, NY – March 20, 2017 – FRONT art space is honored to present SUE FERGUSON GUSSOW: Recent Work, an exhibit of 20 drawings and 2 paintings curated by Dionisio Cortes Ortega.
In the exhibition, unoccupied dresses and spent flowers are among Gussow’s recent themes. Her dress studies not only attest to her mastery, but state her command of the figure despite the absence of the body. These drawings provide a tracery of movement and a memory of the dancer who performed in them; the dresses dance on.
Gussow’s flower drawings might be viewed as meditations on time passing. They speak of nature’s inadvertence and the peculiar beauty of decay. As with the dress drawings, a pristine understanding of form, space and composition is evident.
BIO
Sue Ferguson Gussow is a figurative painter working in a wide range of drawing and painting media. She is Professor Emerita of The Cooper Union School of Architecture where she continues to conduct the Advanced Drawing Seminar. She has taught, lectured or served as visiting critic at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Bennington, Maryland Art Institute, Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, Tulane University, New York University, Alfred University, the Frick Collection, the Royal Academy of Art, School of Architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Aarhus School of Architecture in Aarhus, Denmark and the EPFL. Ecole D’Architecture in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Gussow is represented in numerous museums and collections including the Brookyn Museum, Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Design, Dallas Museum of Fine Art, Seattle Art Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans Jazz Museum, Philadelphia Free Library, Frick Collection Archive and the Museum of Modern Art lending collection. Among private collections holding her work are the C.B.S. Building, Dore Ashton, Schuyler B. Chapin, Diana and David Rockefeller Jr., Mary Schmidt Campbell, Jane and Morley Safer, and the estates of Werner Kramarsky, Van Deren Coke, Carl Djerassi, Jeanette Rockefeller, Werner Muensterberger, and John Hejduk.
Notable among may solo exhibitions were the exhibit at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 1966, the Stanford Museum in 1983 honoring her year at Stanford University as the Pamela Djerassi Visiting Artist (1982-83), a 40 year retrospective at the Houghton Gallery, The Cooper Union in 1997, and most recently the Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, New Jersey in 2015. She is the author of Draw Poker, The Cooper Union, 1997 and Architects Draw, Princeton Architectural Press, 2008.
Members of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture class of 1995 are working to raise an endowed scholarship named in honor of Sue Ferguson Gussow A'56, professor emerita, who taught drawing to generations of graduates of the school: Support Cooper Union
