New York, NY – January 26, 2015 – FRONT art space is pleased to present 43 Preguntas, a solo installation of new work by Dionisio Cortes Ortega. Please join us on Thursday, February 12, from 68 p.m., for the exhibition opening.
43 Preguntas is an installation in reaction to the disappearance of 43 students from the Rural Teachers’ School of Ayotzinapa. About 100 students were traveling on buses towards Iguala Guerrero to protest the lack of rural school funding at a conference that Maria de los Angeles Pineda Villa, wife to the mayor of Iguala, had organized. On their way to the conference, the students were intercepted by municipal armed police forces. The mayor and his wife had instructed the police to "take care" of the students to avoid them from disrupting her conference. A confrontation ensued and the police opened fire on the buses. Two students were killed at the site, several others fled, and 43 were captured by the police and taken into custody. According to investigators, the police handed the students to a criminal organization called Gerreros Unidos, who allegedly proceeded to kill, incinerate, and dump the remains of the students into a river. To this day, the remains of only one student
has been found.
The installation consists of 43 questions directed to the members of cartels and criminal organizations. The purpose of these questions is to engage the viewer and to trigger a process of contextualization and generate an imaginary dialogue between the missing students and the cartel members. Generating possible answers would provide a scenario that would yield clues as to what kind of individuals constitute the criminal organizations, and what types of lives they lived before turning to violence: "Do you have any siblings?"; "Who do you love?"; "When did you hold your first gun? ” If we got to know who the kids behind the guns are, perhaps we would be closer to uncovering the mystery underlying the manifestation of violence in Mexico.
The installation consists of 43 sheets of burnt paper from 43 burnt notebooks. Each sheet of paper contains a question associated with one of the missing students, written in marker and enumerated in ink. On the ground, soil covers the gallery floor.
43 Preguntas es una instalación en reacción a la desaparición de los 43 estudiantes de la Escuela Normal Rural de Ayotzinapa Raúl Isidro Burgos. El 26 de Septiembre de 2014, aproximadamente 100 estudiantes viajaban en autobuses hacia Iguala, Guerrero para protestar por la falta de presupuesto para su escuela. Ya en Iguala y bajo las ordenes del alcalde José Luis Abarca, el contingente de estudiantes fue interceptados por las fuerzas armadas de la policía municipal. El alcalde Abarca supuso que los estudiantes se dirigían a boicotear el acto de informe de gobierno de su esposa María de los Ángeles Pineda. Se produjo un enfrentamiento y la policía abrió fuego contra los autobuses; seis personas murieron, entre ellos tres normalista, 25 resultaron heridos y 43 desaparecieron. Según las investigaciones, los 43 estudiantes desparecidos fueron
capturados por la policía y puestos bajo custodia para posteriormente ser entregados a la organización criminal Guerreros Unidos. Según el informe oficial de la PGR Guerreros Unidos aparentemente procedió a eliminarlos, incinerarlos, y a volcar los restos en un río. Sin embargo hasta hoy, solo se han encontrado los restos de un estudiante.
La instalación 43 preguntas son 43 preguntas dirigidas a los miembros de los cárteles y organizaciones criminales. El propósito de estas preguntas es involucrar al espectador, y al mismo tiempo asentar un proceso de contextualización y fraguar un diálogo imaginario entre los estudiantes desaparecidos y los miembros del cártel. La generación de respuestas posibles proporcionaría un escenario que podría dar pistas sobre la idiosincrasia de los individuos que constituyen las organizaciones criminales y el tipo de oportunidades de vida disponibles para ellos antes de recurrir a la violencia: ¿Tienes hermanos?; ¿A quien amas?; ¿A que edad usaste tu primera arma?". Si llegáramos a conocer quienes son las personas que están detrás de las armas criminales, tal vez estaríamos más cerca de descubrir el misterio que subyace en la violencia recurrente y paralizante que somete a México.
La instalación consta de 43 hojas de papel quemado, parte de 43 cuadernos quemados. Cada hoja, enumerada en tinta, contiene una pregunta que escrita en marcador hipotéticamente es anunciada por cada uno de los estudiantes desaparecidos. El piso de la galería esta cubierto con tierra.
